Contractor Class Code Library
A workers' compensation class code describes what your employees actually do, and it sets the rate basis for your payroll. Contractors are usually rated across several codes at once, and the split between them is verified at premium audit. Below are the codes covering the trades Anvil serves.

Classification wording follows the NCCI Scopes manual. Some states (including California, New York and a handful of others) use their own bureau classifications instead of NCCI. Your governing code is assigned by the carrier or rating bureau, not by this page.
How contractors lose money on classification
- Everything in one code. If all payroll sits in the highest-rated code because the records will not support a split, you overpay all year and only find out at audit.
- A split you cannot document. The reverse error. Payroll divisions between codes generally need to be supported by records; unsupported splits get reassigned to the higher-rated code.
- Ignoring the state overlay. Florida is the clearest example: whether your code appears on the adopted construction-industry list in Rule 69L-6.021 changes your coverage threshold from four employees to one.
- Stale codes after the work changed. A residential framer who took on a commercial job, or a tree company that added landscaping, is often still rated on last year's operation.

What is workers' comp class code 5551?
5551 is Roofing — All Kinds & Drivers. It covers tear-off, installation and repair of all roof types plus the drivers who haul material to the job. It is one of the highest-hazard construction classifications and is frequently excluded from instant-quote platforms.
What is the difference between class code 5645 and 5403?
5645 is Carpentry — Detached One- or Two-Family Dwellings: framing and finish work on detached one- and two-family homes. 5403 is Carpentry NOC, which covers commercial, apartment and mixed-use construction. The residential/commercial line between them is the most consequential classification decision a framing contractor makes.
What is class code 0106?
0106 is Tree Pruning, Spraying, Repairing — All Operations & Drivers. It applies to tree work where any part of the job requires elevation, whether by ladder, lift or climbing. Ground-level landscaping is normally 0042 instead.
